Background
I’ve lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1972, much longer than those first 20 years in Glenwood City area. Special thanks is owed to our high school classmate Randal Gast for opening an employment door for me in Minneapolis many years ago that eventually led to my relocating to California and a 40 year career here.
High school Memory
Several years ago my wife and I were at a holiday get together, work related I recall. The evening went on with the typical finger foods, cocktails and b.s. about work, kids etc. We were approached by a guy who introduced himself and said he heard a Midwest accent in our voices and was curious as to where we were from. We introduced ourselves and gave our typical response that we were originally from small towns in Wisconsin, roughly 50 miles east of Minneapolis / St Paul, Minnesota. (Hate to use ”Minnesota” but when you are 2000 mile away, it’s the biggest spot on the map that a stranger may be able to relate to). Oh, Wisconsin, where abouts he asked. My wife replied she was from Amery Wisconsin, and I was from Glenwood City. Without a bit of hesitation, he raised his voice and loudly proclaimed Glenwood City 51, Eau Claire Memorial 50, High School regional Basketball Playoffs 1967 (?) Best damn high school game I’ve ever seen!
We spent probably the next hour explaining to guests what that outburst was all about and where we were from.
Enjoy.
